People search on Instagram now, not Google

Roughly one in three consumers skip Google entirely. Over half of Gen Z start on social.

The habit changed quietly. Nearly one in three consumers now skip Google altogether when looking for something, and more than half of Gen Z begin a search on TikTok, Instagram or YouTube. They are not browsing. They are searching — with intent, for a place to eat tonight or a clinic to book next week.

That has an unglamorous consequence: your captions are now search results.

Write like someone is looking for you

Most brand captions are written to sound good. A caption that gets found says what the thing is, where it is, and who it is for. "New menu 🤍" ranks for nothing. "Our new omakase set, available at our Senopati branch from Friday" is a search result. You can have the brand voice and the keywords. It just takes someone whose job is to write it.

The content that wins is educational

What people search for on social skews practical: how-tos, walkthroughs, honest reviews, what to order. For a clinic that is a procedure explained plainly. For a café it is what is actually good on the menu. This is the content most brands skip because it feels less glamorous than a mood reel — which is exactly why it is uncontested.

Both fronts, one system

None of this replaces Google. It sits beside it. The venues that win discovery in 2026 are the ones whose name appears when someone types a dish into Instagram, and whose profile appears when someone types the dish into Maps. Same content, two doors.

The work is not harder. It is just planned instead of improvised.
