What Instagram actually ranks in 2026

Sends, watch time and original content. Everything else is noise.

Every few months a new theory goes around about what Instagram is rewarding. Most of it is guesswork. The signals Instagram has actually confirmed are short enough to list, and they change what a monthly content plan should look like.

Sends now matter more than likes

Instagram has been explicit that it is putting more weight on shares — a post sent to a friend in DMs is treated as a stronger signal than a like, because it is harder to fake and closer to genuine interest. For a restaurant, that reframes the job: the target post is not the prettiest one, it is the one somebody forwards to the person they want to eat with.

In practice that means content with a reason to be passed on. A new menu item. A promo worth telling someone about. A place that looks like a plan for Friday. Pure brand-mood posts rarely get sent anywhere.

Watch time, then the hook

For Reels, the ranking inputs are watch time, rewatches, and whether people follow after watching. All three are decided in the first second. Adam Mosseri's own guidance is unglamorous: a strong hook, captions, audio, and keep it under three minutes.

This is why we cut client reels tight and shoot for the opening frame specifically. A beautiful ten-second establishing shot is a luxury you pay for in retention.

Original beats repurposed

Instagram down-ranks content that looks recycled from elsewhere — watermarks from other apps are the obvious tell. If your agency is exporting the same file to four platforms, some of that reach is being quietly taxed.

And now the audience gets a vote

The newer "Your Algorithm" controls let people tell Instagram what they want more and less of. Feeds are becoming self-curated, which means content has to match a stated preference, not just win a prediction. Niche and specific wins. Generic loses.

What we'd change tomorrow

If you do one thing this month: stop measuring your feed by likes and start looking at sends and saves. Then plan next month around what actually got sent. That single swap changes what gets made — and it costs nothing.
